We have recently completed major rehabilitation and upgrade
work to the Upper Ballyjamesduff River, which flows into the Mountnugent River
and then into Lough Sheelin. The Mountnugent River is one of the main spawning
streams for the lake and the Ballyjamesduff area was an important area for
spawning fish in the past. The work to the river is part of the ongoing
development of spawning streams, which the club intend to carry out over the
next number of years.
The length of river, which has been rehabilitated, is 2 miles and is in the
Lishenry and Pottle townlands of Ballyjamesduff. The work carried out
included bank clearance the provision of spawning gravel into sections of the
river, the provision of deflectors, and creation of pools and installation
of 2 V-notched weirs. We also re-enforced bends of river and areas where erosion
had taken place with stone boulders. The river was narrowed with stone
in slow flowing/stagnant areas to increase the speed of the water, increase
oxygen and create a better habitat for spawning fish. The work also
included the erection of fencing to prevent cattle damage (pollution) to the
river and protect the riparian zone of the river.
